What are Buckets for?

Some of you might have noticed that when you post content, you earn 'buckets'--for posting, comments, blogs, images, etc. on the Bucketworks website. What are these good for?

We're working on a 'points' system or 'karma' system that rewards people for participating in the Bucketworks micro-economy, not just online but offline as well. For example, if you use Bucketworks to host an event, you'll earn 'buckets'--just like you do when you post a blog entry or content. These buckets will eventually be redeemable for services from Bucketworks, and, ideally, for services exchanged between members. We want to experiment with various forms of cashless economies here.

We haven't figured out the exchange rate or any of the other basics, but I'd love to hear your input on this idea because I think it could be fun.

For the time being, here are the

Rules for Earning and Spending Buckets:

  1. While anyone who registers on the site and posts content can earn buckets, they will only be approved, and hence redeemable, by Bucketworks members (any kind of member.)
  2. Until the exchange rate is set, buckets are not redeemable for anything. Just earn 'em for now.
  3. Buckets do not expire, but may do so in the future.
  4. Buckets are awarded for activities as follows:

Please post your comments with ideas on other things that you can do to earn buckets. We're all ears. Even down to renaming what a Bucket is-- I've gotten feedback that the name isn't as clever as it ought to be, or as short and sweet to say. What should a currency be named? How would a social enterprise award it to contributing members of its community? I want to hear from you!
